Ancient EQ – The TOLTEC wisdom

The realisation of emotional intelligence is not new. The ancients spoke if it, they taught  it and it was the foundation of being human and living right. The ancients did not know it by the name ‘emotional intelligence’. They know it by other names.

The Toltec were a race that dominated southern Mexico in the early post-classic period of Mesoamerica (ca. 900–1168 CE).  The much later Aztec culture observed the Toltecs as their intellectual and cultural predecessors and spoke of the Toltec culture as the  epitome of civilization.

Here is a Toltec warrior quote:

“When a warrior makes the decision to take action, he should be prepared to die. If he is prepared to die, there shouldn’t be any pitfalls, any unwelcome surprises, any unnecessary acts. Everything should gently fall into place because he is expecting nothing’

Emotions are clearly managed in this process of warrior decision-making. Emotional intelligence is not the absence of emotions but the managing of emotions to make unusual clear decisions and accepting he outcome. Your developed EQ will provide you with strength of heart and spirit. The conqueror in you will rise.

The EQ skill of SELF AWARENESS is evident in this quote. Self-Awareness is about being aware of the way you feel and the impact your feelings can have on decisions, behaviour and performance.
